I have recently set up a new dirted tank using earthworm castings. The tank has been cycled but I having issues with high nitrates. There are no fish in the tank. Just plants and some snails. I'm wondering if the earthworm castings are leaving something into the water column. Any suggestions are welcome.

Hello everyone,

I need some help with my 5.5 gallon planted tank. I've been in the hobby for 11 years but just got into plants. I have Cryps, amazon swords, and anubias. I want to add more plants like ludwigia and maybe some more cryps. However I want to upgrade my substrate first. I'm running it low tech. I have a Finnex Stingray Clip on light, I put H20 root tabs in every 2 months, and I'm dosing half ML of Flourish once a week. My cryps are growing well, my amazon sword…

My cryps are growing well, my amazon sword has shot out 6 new stems and I already trimmed some. Alge is barely growing. I feel like I have pretty good balance. Again though I want more plants but feel like root tabs won't be enough. I want to know if Fluval Stratum or dirt substrate is better. Even another substrate, but I can't find good answers on the internet because everyone has success and failures with both. I'm just trying to find what is right for me.
Lights how much is enough.tag:fishtanktv.com,2017-06-21:6423219:BlogPost:9137392017-06-21T18:45:27.000ZKendalhttp://fishtanktv.com/profile/Kendal

Hey what's up everyone? I got myself a 29gal kit awhile back. It's my first tank ever and although the first fish I got have all passed I've had my new community healthy (3 black Molly fry- the spawn of a deceased generation- 4 neon tetras, 2 albino Corys and a retail shark)and thriving for several months (close to a year I think). The thing is... I want to overhaul the tank, that is, convert from gravel and plastic to dirt and live plants.

The set-up is pretty low-tech. Whisper 30 HoB filter, 200 watt heater which is far more that I will ever need since I live in Florida and we keep the a/c around 78 in the summer... And an air pump rated for a 10 gallon tank. The lights are LED but I'm not sure about their power.

I've done my research and have a plan in place for the conversion. I only have 2 concerns though that I thought I could get some feedback on...

#1 is it to soon for the community of fish?
#2 do you think the LEAD light strip I have will be adequate for some lava fern, dawrf sag, Amazon sword and Anubis?Robert Steinbeck dirt mixturetag:fishtanktv.com,2017-01-07:6423219:BlogPost:9120202017-01-07T13:32:40.000ZRaecine Chaneyhttp://fishtanktv.com/profile/RaecineChaney

Thanks for the add. I'm new to the site. Watch a bunch a vids on youtube and found this site. Right now I have a 10 gallon stocked with artificial plants, sand, heater, aquatech 5-15 gal filter. And it has a betta in it. My son wants to add fish to it. I'm planning on converting it over to a dirted tank first. Just got to get the supplies and do it.

So after a year and a half of killing plants, I decided it's time to upgrade my lighting an dirt my 2 tanks. (I have my 35 now dirted with the fish in a holding tank and my 125 still to change over)
My question is is if do a ton of water changes and use existing filter what's the soonest I can put my fish back in the newly dirted tank?

So back onto my fish obsession! Restarted my 55g with my 10g as a quarantine tank. So I knew that the fish I absolutely need in my FOWLR are marine betta, dwarf lionfish, and snowflake eel. So far, it has been a couple of months with just the Marine Betta in the 55g. I had an antenatta but it didn't make it past a week so I returned it and got a Blue spot puffer instead and the eel is still not eating as of a month by the time I am posting this.
Any suggestions on what else I should put in my 55g FOWLR tank?
Hello everyone!

Ok, so I already bought 2 bags of Organic Choice "Potting mix"Miracle Grow, but on another channel, they are saying that the Miracle grown Organic Choice "Garden Soil" is better!!! They said that it has less ammonia and it doesn't take as long to cycle...

Well, I don't mind if it takes 4 to 6 weeks to cycle. I am ok with that. But is it better in other ways?

Which one do you recommend? I know Dustin Recommends the Organic "Potting Mix... but was wondering if the other "Garden Soil" is a new soil and if it's better.

So it was my day off today. My grandma just celebrated her 67 birthday I gave her my betta as a gift and I helped set up her lil three gal as aswell she loves tanks as much as I do. I get back home and started on my tank since today is the only day I get to clean my tank and do a water change. I figured how about a 50% change trim the plant all will be good. As I'm preping the hose my wife is running around the house trying to get ready for work and asks if I could get her a lunch ready so I start cooking. Meanwhile, my work calls me and like all smart people I let that shit go to voicemail since I wasn't gonna let them work me another week straight so I play the message it's the dreaded manager he very rudely tells me to 'come into work now!' And hangs up. I'm mad as hell I start to slowly fill my tank up feeling under pressure I burn my wife's lunch. As throwing away the what use to be chicken, I suddenly remember my work texts me this time ' where are you we need you now!' . A mini volcano blew up in my brain I walk over to my tank to up the power on my hose to fill it up faster. I'm looking for my water conditioner in the car in my house I couldn't find it any where. I start to panic. Next thing I know my grandma calls me and tells me I left my stuff at her house she's a thirty minute drive from where I am. I'm furious at my self for being so forgetful. My tank is filling up with regular in conditioned water. I'm looking At my fish to see if they're ok and very body had like stopped swimming ex body was at the top trying to grab some kind of air next thing I knew I loose all my white clouds next my gold barb then my cherry barbs then my bumble bee gobies my full grown Cory cat my Julie cat a fourth gen guppie. I lost around 25 fish. I was devastated I finally had the perfect community and it was all gone in a flash had to leave to work they told me a lot of people called out sick and needed the extra hand. I apologized to my about her lunch and left work it sucked harder that day than any other day. When I get home to my surprise one guppie survived and all my shrimp survived wich is ironic cause those bastards are sensitive to everything. That was the silver lining to it all I moved so e female guppies to the tank to keep the male happy I figured I test the water till it got back to normal eventually I'll get the water conditioners back and I figured I'll keep adding plants to it in the meantime. I'm researching new fish to add to my tank and that's an adventure in itself I hope that never happens again. That was my bad day.How do I find Inert Rocks!tag:fishtanktv.com,2014-09-14:6423219:BlogPost:8824632014-09-14T13:30:00.000ZMichael Kollinhttp://fishtanktv.com/profile/MichaelKollin

Hey, the last 2 rocks I tried in my tank, raised the PH even though they weren't supposed to, supposedly!! I like to keep my tanks at 6.8 or so…

I'm in Northern California near San Francisco, live in Marin County. Anyone know of any rocks that won't raise the PH in my tank that I can buy locally at a rock place or even find?
So Im doing a dirted/substrate tank for my 20 gallon

Im planning on using 1.5-2 inch dirt. Then cap it with flourite substrate. Then maybe another cap of pool filter sand for baby tears or small rooted plants.( or did you think it will spread on the flourite>?)

Then im going to build a DIY co2 system

It will be run a 40 watt at least 5000k light

All I have right now is the tank and fixture of the light.

The plants I wanted are dwarf sag, jungle val,…

Light from a fluorescent tube for example is emitted in all different directions ( using a shield to direct light down towads the plants an water helps alot.

Some light is refracted from the waters surface.

Some light is lost through the aquarium glass.

Condensation trays if left unclean will stop alot of light.

Particles such in the water such as algea will soak up a large amount of light.

Light will also pass teh the water and its spectrum is changed as it is absorbed and coverted into heat energy.

So if you want to carpet certain plants they will on receive a small amount of light emitted from the bulbs.

Large plants can also block light in upper levels of the aquarium and minimize light reaching lower smaller plants.

Florescent lighting: - Is a cheap and good way to go for beginners or people who do not want to spend a fortune on lighting but still want a descent planted tank. ( You will just need a sufficiant amount of it) But that is ok because they are one of the lowest energy users.

- florescent light doesn't penetrate to the bottom of the tank unless you have a good amount of it as well.

- You will also have to change the bulbs forom every 6 to 12 months. As they loose their intensity but will still appear to work fine. ( the plants will know)

- pink phillips t-12 bulbs work amazingly and are alot cheaper than aquarium t-5s or t-8s but give off a pink hue that the plants love. If you add in a white buld or light blue it mellows out the pink.

Florescent lighting is Great for shallow tanks or smaller tanks In a tank that is 15in (38cm) deep or less i would use 1.5 - 2 watts per gallon of aquarium water but for deeper tanks you can go a couple different ways.

DIY LED / LED SYSTEMS: LED lighting is another low energy cost of lighting that produces high lighting environments for plants. ( But unless its DIY it cost a shit load of money right now and the ones you buy are usually not good enough and you end up adding more.) Plus I read that the technology of LED aquarium lights does not succeed the technology of an LED flashlight! That is why i make my own. ( not literally)

With LED you almost never have to change a buld.

They look amazing.

High light for high light plants.

You have to watch for algea sometimes switching to high light right away triggers and algae bloom.

SO like I said you can either buy 2 or 3 or the 400$ each systems or build your own for less than 200 that puts out far stronger light thank aquarium LEDS.

Im going to post some links to the best DIY LED systems that i use in more that 4 of my tanks and plant farm tanks and tables.

The first video has 2 parts to it. They are pretty much a normal kitchen or bathroom fancy fixture that runs 50 watt metal halide but you can convert to gu10 LED bulds that run i believe 15 watts and put out the same amount as a 50 watt metal halide.

You can get all of this stuff at home depot, home hardware, rona ect.

Here is the first DIY led light system that i used 2 of...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzVEmJy7yHY ( click the link in the video to watch part 2)

The next video is a system i use on my planted dirt tank and my plant farm tanks. Its basically outdoor LED flood lights that put out 6500k of light. You can get different sizes im using one that runs at 20 watts or somthing light that and puts out the amount of light a 100 watt bulb does.

I used them in reptile heat lamp light shade that cost probably 10 bucks.

The bulbs are a but prices mine are phillips and they are about 35 dollars each but they last for 27 years and if you run it at 3 hours a day its says on label it will cost you 125 bucks in those 27 years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To1FkOA0lgM ( After this first video wayne has used i think about 6 or 7 of these lights ever since in his 125 gallon.)

This last video is one of my fav lighting systems that I only have on one tank right now but i love them!

Same as the spot light but a different kind and style. CHECK IT OUT!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGhWziY_zh0

Like I said I think these are the best and cheapest ways to light your aquarium and i hope this helps you figure out if you wanna spend alot of money and have a nice tank or barely anything and have and amazing tank.
