Just getting back into the hobby after 10 years, always had HOB filters before. i will be getting a canister filter for this new setup after i get the stand built, just have room for a 40b 

Curious about why the white polishing pads after the bio filtration, seems like all mechanical filtration should be before the biological media?

because the water flows from the bottom of of the canister up

Sorry you may have misunderstood my question.

I was referring to the white pad at the top, do you need a pad at the top to keep bio media from being sucked into the impeller of the pump?

The white pad is there to polish the water as it returns to the tank. Coarse are at the bottom to catch large debris before it gets to the media.
