Yes they can sand works better than dirt make sure tank is well established before introducing crayfish.

Thanks! The tank is pretty established! I heard the cray fish can eat live plants is that true??

They can but my friend has had them with live plants and had no problems but they do like to eat fish so just be aware if you are going to house with fish.
