Sorry, it's taken me so long to get this to ya...long story short my car started acting up and crapped out on Sat. So, we went truck shopping :)

Slate Background
Tools-
Slate tiles (bought @ homedepot)
Silicone caulk in clear
Hammer
Towel 
Safety goggles (I probably should of used those!)

Basically, I just wanted something different for my tank background and didn't want something manufactured looking I guess. My husband came up with this, I also did some googling and was able to find a pic similar to what I had in my head.
Anyway, made a trip to homedepot and bought slate tiles and the caulk. I measured out to see if the tiles could fit whole across the back and I found that 4 whole tiles would fit flush across the top but I'd have to break them in about 1/2 to fit the bottom. From there I just went through each tile wrapping them in a towel and busting them with a hammer until I was happy with the size/shape. When I had all the pieces I wanted I went through and glued each one down with the silicone. The silicone I used set up in about 2hrs but, I let it dry for a couple of days. Then just stand up the tank and make sure you fill/drain it about 6X to flush out any particles from the slate and neutralize any chemicals that may leak from the caulk.
