if you can get them when they are small size..they might be able to coup together to adulthood.

 

cichlid are aggressive in nature so you can't really say ..they will not defend their territory.

A 40 gallon is too small for any of those fish. You need a 55 gallon just to house one of those fish. They would b fine if just kept as juveniles but as they grow they will get aggressive twords eachother. Like to the point of killing eachother. There is a great site for fish stocking just google aqadvisor. As far as stronger I found a Dempsey that is fed live fish will rule any cichlid but green terrors get pretty aggressive and have more personality. Check my vids on you tube

if you really like cichild...

 

look for apistogramma

 

great fish and very small and you can keep a couple speices in the tank.

i would go with mubuna or apistogrammas, rams ect. with apistogrammas or rams u can keep other fish like tetras aswell. angelfish are cichlids but probably not ur type.

what about jewel cichlids, are they compatible with apistogrammas. I like aggresive fish, however im not one of those guys looking for something just to feed it feeders. I just happen to like aggresive fish im not bloodthirsty or anything. Any way are apistogrammas aggresive?

no jewel cichlids are african cichlids and prefer different ph and also are way more aggressive
