I recently watched one of Dustin's videos of him placing some of his organic dirt media in a new planted tank.  It seems that he puts quite a thick layer at the base and I am curious if anyone has seen any issues with anaerobic conditions over time?

Do people aerate there substrates often?  See any issues with "root rot" as a result of poor oxygen exchange?

I personally use a similar style "dirt tank" and create my own dirt by mineralizing topsoil.  I only place a very small layer at the base of the tank substrate strata because my past experiences have resulted in some problems with oxygen exchange to the bottom and consequently, root rot and some funky long term issues.

Would love to hear some thoughts on this.
