A few hours after waking up this morning I noticed my angelfish and ram going at it. They would "stand up" side by side, and also face to face.  I was a bit worried that there would be physical damage as a result of the brawl, so I fed a bit of food and turned out the lights. This has held them off for the time being. My question is what is the best solution to prevent further altercations between these fish? As of now, I do not have anything in the middle of the tank to break the sight barrier, and that is my assumption of why this started. Hopefully some driftwood that is taller will help break it up, and make the tank look better. Do you think there's anything that triggered this fight? I have never seen this behavior before between these two fish. Below are some pictures captured during the fight...

Just two assertive cichlids in your tank squabbling. Likely nothing negative will come of it. if it were serious it would be relentless fighting. What your describing is more passive, sizing each other up.

You're right that having the tank so open would encourage this. the fish are constantly in eye sight with each other. I think there should be a crypt forest in the middle... enh? eh?

Alright good to know, thanks for the help man! A crypt forest would be awesome, but do you think they would grow in straight up sand? I also think my lighting (17watt T8) is a bit on the lowwww side haha

Might? But most crypts probably just grow shirt and dense.
