I swear by Seachem Purigen - you can re-use it and it works wonders in not only taking care of Nitrates, nitrites and ammonia, etc. I set up a tank with Mopani wood and the water even after changing was stained with tannins, I put a bag of Purigen in my HOB filter and in the morning the water was crystal clear.
