Well ever since Hurricane Irene pretty much ruin my show tank in my room and had to transfer my

resealed 55 long tank( what luck), it lead me an excuse to do dirt or planted tank. I have been thinking about this for a long time since. I would some of your feedback of doing a Planted tank in a small bedroom.

Well anyway here is my data in my head. Most of the stuff I already gotten.

Here is my Plan

Note: I have not started yet. Doing the layout and all.

Goal: Low Tech Tank in small bedroom. Try without CO2. Peaceful community

Equipement

-Tank- 40 gallon

-Filter- Fluval 205 Canister

          - The bio media has already been establish since it is being used in other tank.

-Subrate: of course dirt ( just doing more research the size of them per particle)

Lighting-????( Only have an ALL-GLASS AQUARIUM FLUORESCENT BULB 17W) Need

help knowing what exactly I have. Don't know what spectrum it is yet.

-2 peices of wood- will show pics later.

-

Fishes and Party( debating what route)

* I live in CT,USA area. So make sure fish can be ok with temperature change of colder weather.

( This tank does have a heater with settings)

-----Top-Mid Dwelling fish

*pretty much any Tetras

- Neon Tetras

-Black Tetras

-Blue Emperor Tetra

-Green Tiger Barbs ( prob be the only ones in this area and with others)

-Silver Hatchetfish

----Bottom Dwellers/Clean up crew

-Cory Cats- don't know which ones to get yet

*Green Cory Cats

* Sterba Cory

*Panda Cory

- Cherry Shrimp

Plants-

The Big Boy- The Tall one

---Star Grass

Low level section

---Anubias Nana mostly be on wood

---Ludwigia Repens

Carpet

-Really don't know yet.

Well I think that is about it. I hope to start ASAP during the mid-weekday. Because its

getting colder and limit of fish to get in stores.

Question Corner

1. How much does it smell of planted tanks in small bedroom?

    ways to deal with it?

2.Suggestions of what Light bulb to get? or the one I have is fine of the plants I want?

3. Should I just use my other fish tank water to speed the process of the cycle?

I only had smelly water when my water wasn't in balance. Now there is only a slight odor if you are right over the tank.
Those plants don't seem to be high light plants, but I've never had stargrass. If you want a carpet you might need an upgrade.

everythings looks good!

the smell is when you have anaerobic gas build up and it smell really bad...

try to find a light bulb that has full spectrum with 6700k.

Don't use other tank water..there is nothing in it...better use the media!

I have already started the bio-media already in my tropical tanks that has already been established. The other tank matches the conditions for the fish I am planning to get. As

stated above. But I am thinking doing 1/2 old water and the other new. Plus I do have

old filters from that tank as well.

I don't know if the light I already has is already that range. That why I asked. if

the one I have already is. But Im prob gonna keep it safe and compare it when I go shopping.
