i use a aquarium tong/plant tool that is long to reach my deep 55g. I grab with it and pull items up then grab them by hand.

LOL. I know that feeling and I just lowered my tank stand height so I don't stand on a

chair or what-not.

 

But you can also use an extension of a garden tools is nice.

The is a great tool.  I have two but this one doubles for trimming as well as grabbing.
