I've got a new betta coming in a few days for my 12 gallon Fluval Edge and I was wondering what tank mates people have had with little to no problems. I have a betta in my original tank with some neons and cories and apart from him eating two of the neons when we had a long weekend and he didn't get fed for four days (the fish are at my work office) there hasn't been any problems.

But, I don't want two identical tanks. So what tank buddies would do well with a betta from your experience?

I am not so sure I would keep some species of tetra with a betta...Some of them have a potential to be pretty darn nippy, especially in smaller tanks. If you choose to try it I would be cautious and keep a close eye on your betta's fins.

I've been squeezing out the sponge from my established tank into my new one every few days now for a couple of weeks to transfer some good bacteria and so far I haven't seen any ammonia in the 12 gallon despite having Zebra Danios in there for four days now. Is it possible that they just haven't made enough waste for it to be detectable yet? Or could the transferred bacteria have already caught up with the needs of the fish? There are low levels of Nitrites and Nitrates, so clearly some biological activity is happening. But I'm too cautious to think that the cycle really could be past the ammonia spike stage.

Could it be possible that the transferred bacteria is already sufficient to neutralize the ammonia of four Zebra Danios?
