better cheaper filters? canister maybe?

I have a quite flow 20 and another quite flow 10 on my 20 gallon, and the actuall filters for them are expensive but there doing the job. I'm just wondering if there's any thing cheaper in the long run. Thinking maybe a canister, I know there expensive at first but how about the maintanice?

I am now running all canisters and wouldnt go back. Id get a SunSun/Perfect Canister off of Ebay for cheap and your set. I was hesitant at first but broke down and tried them. I like it as much as my eheim pro 3 2075. Its actually just as quiet too. Only have to clean then once every few months compared to weekly, and it only actually takes you like 10 min per filter if your thorough. Can do a quick cleaning in a few min easily once you get the procedure for you filter down.

Plus I think it makes the tank look so much cleaner without the filter hanging off the back.

there's a diy moving bed filter made from k1 caldness an airstone and a pump with airline. It's great for smaller tanks and it's really cheap (k1 is like 3 bucks a litre) you just need a juice container (They're the only ones with the right shape needed, drill a hole through the cap and squeeze the airline tubing through, seal the hole with sealant on both sides and poke holes in the bottom and top of the bottle. Next, after the sealant sets, you're going to attach suction cups to the back of the bottle and fill it with the k1 media. When it's full and the cap is back on securely you flip it upside down and stick it to the inside of the aquarium. Attach the other end of the airline tubing to an air pump and let it run.
