Generally rams are known to be hard to breed and keep. As a general rule if you keep the conditions perfect so acidic and loads of plants generally they should spawn. Although firstly they wont breed well with other tank inhabitants as they are not good at looking after their fry. The fry will have to be cared for by the owner rather then the fish.

Thanks for the response.  That first male died after being in the tank for about a week.  They spawned, ate the eggs, then the male died a few days later.  I now have had a new male for close to 3 weeks and he has paired and spawned.  I don't expect this first batch to survive but who knows.
