Brown algae are actually diatoms, microrganisms tht reproduced at a very fast rate for the first few months in a new tank. Otocinclus prefer these over all other algae, but these fish are sensitive. Amano shrimp can be used, as can most snails.

there are other tricks to fighting algae.....make sure you're not overfeeding and cut back the amount of time the lights are on. Water changes are also helpful.
