It removes tannis, medication( if u added too much) , removes smell, and clears up water a bit.

clears smell and removes chemicals some say it takes nutrients from plants but I think the benefits out way the problems.

They remove all kinds of stuff from the water, but it isn't good for planted tanks, because they remove the nutrients in the water. And plants are way better at filtering than carbon in my opinion. You can use it in fish only tanks and they will do a good job at cleaning the water, but are not necessary.
