I grew mine in straight sand using liquid fertz.

no but plants absorb 4 to 400% of it nutrients from its roots so dirt does really make it grow and look healthy as apposed to untreated gravel/ substrate

No dirt just ferts...the now grow easily 4-6 feet long.
