Just like what Paterson said. Let them dry out in the sun, remove unwanted bark from the wood and soak them (it also good to scrub them down as they are soaking). But depending on your size of the driftwood your getting you can also boil it to remove mold, insects, and dirt. After soaking it and boiling the wood let it bake in the sun for a good month. Or a quicker way like I sad before depending the sizes, you can bake it in the oven for a good hour. I found this nice piece of driftwood near a lake.

yeah with the wood just scrubb it with a brush ie toothbrush or whateveer and hot water, no soap. then its ready to rock i wouldn't let it set out because then your just letting it get bugs and bacteria in it again. if its small enough just boil it. if not don't worry. i don't bake it it sounds like a bad idea to me, baking wood. just try to get wood thats dead but its not a must. sometimes you can have problems with newer liver plants leaching sapp. u can remove the bark if you want. and with the rocks its fine. you just need to make sure they wont screw with your ph. a rough test is to pour vinager on them if they fizz they're no good. but i would still monitor your ph for a few days. o yeah and just scrub down the rocks to with hot water. good luck and some of the best and most memorable pieces are the ones you find yourself in the wild. if you got anyother questions or need help with anything else just let me know ill do what i can.
thanks slot eveyone for your help I found 2 smalle prices of drift wood but I think they are ceder and are to broken dowm. For the rock its a cool pinkish red with black steeks through it. Is it okay that is has those crystal kinda stuff in it ? Ill take all the feedback possible to make this happen. Thanks you all. trying to check in as much as I can on my blackberry.
