What I do is go on cragilist and just search for tanks and supplies thts how I got my saltwater tank u can prob get a thirty for like 20-40 bucks 
Cories I have ten sterbais they are great little fish I have dirt roottabs fluorite black hot5x4 lighting and the cories do fine breed everytime I do a waterchange goodluck

for an update on my decisions i will be getting a 20g tank and still have not decided on anything else. so i would appreciate your help.

Ok so a 20g tank means u can have like 14 corydoras cus they get like 2 inches big  you already know about substrate(ie sand / river gravel) u know Cory's school soo get them in GPRS also if your going to dirt your tank obviously get real plants preferably not stem plants cus corys might up root them wen they bump into them and that's basically it u can put your ghost shrimp and Corys in at te same time Cory's don't bother the shrimp n. vice versa nothing much more for you to learn.  O yea There are many many diff types Cory so chose te 1s u think look best I like julil Cory's personally

I also had problems keeping panda's, only tried them once, got 2 of them(it was a smaller tank so that was all I felt comfortable with) and they were both dead in a few days. Now I keep Julii's, haven't had one die on me yet and I love they colors. They are also very friendly and fun to watch. Plus their unique marking make it easy to tell a difference between them and you can start to pick up on their individual personalities.

I know there are some sites that say you have to have 5-6 or more but I again started with 2 and they were perfectly happy, I'd always see them playing together. They'd play this one "game" where they would swim up and down the glass and try to swim across each others back. I recently found more Julii's at the pet store so I got another just to see if how he would do with them since they'd been alone for so long, but they happily accepted him into their group within minutes of putting him in the tank. So I'd recommend starting with a couple and adding a few at a time until you get to the amount you want. Adding a bunch of fish all at once risks overload the tank and causing spikes in ammonia and nitrites and usually results in a losing a couple fish anyway.

hey guys an update on my tank. i got a 20g long for free cam with everything but a light and i have added a light on. it also came with 2 fish 1 zebra catfish and 1 tetra dont know what type. ive been cleaning the tank and adjusting little things so i can plan for my tank. below is a list of the fish i will be getting for the tank

5 corys

7 neon tetras

1halfmoon betta

6 red cherry shrimps

7 albino beunos aires tetras

still havent decided on live plants or fake plants and i have decided to add in the tank a peice of driftwood and small black gravel so the shrimp can shift through it and it wont hurt the corys underbelly. i am planning on keeping the zebra catfish and giving away the tetra. i would sell the tetra although the previous owner had an angelfish (which he kept) that bit the tetras fins so i dont think anyone would buy it.

Fake Plants Are Just Decorations. Plain And Simple. Some Can Hurt Your Fish SO Check Them If You Do Buy Them. Real Plants Are Like Filters. They Help With Nitrites In Your Tank. Also Almost All Fish Love Them. From Hiding In Them Or Around Them To Grazing On The Plant.

I Dont Think Having A Halfmoon Betta In That Community Unless Your Going To Plant It Heavily Or You Buying A Female Halfmoon Bettas(Which Are Not As Nice As The Males). Males Will Chase All Your Fish And Maybe Even Kill Them. But If Your Tank Was Plants Heavily Your Fish Would Have Many Hiding Areas And The Betta Would Focus More On Exploring.

Hey guys another update ive been running the tank now for 2 days i took out the bubble bar so the fish have more space i also took out the stupid decorations and put in a live rock and a fake plant (for now) while i was doing  a water change today i noticed the water was vey cold and i realized the heater was broken so i went out and bought a new one i have the tempature on 76 and the fish are now alot more active. i am now definately going to dirt the tank and put live plants so ideas for easy to grow, hardy live plants would help me out alot

the fish i am deciding on getting now are below

5 corys (mixed types)

6 red cherry shrimp (3 male, 3 female)

1 halfmoon or veiltail betta

7 neon tetras

thxs for the help guys its nice to see fellow hobbyist helping out a begginer

Live Rock in fresh water and not salt water is gonna turn to dead rock.  Those belong in saltwater tanks

Whoa.. whoa....... whoa................ whoa.... Why did you put live rock in your tank? Live rock is for saltwater tanks, not fresh water. If you seriously put live rock in your freshwater tank then you need to take it out. I'd drain all the water out totally start over because I'm sure there's still salt on the rocks, not to mention all the micro-organisms that makes live rock "live". 

I'd also recommend over doing one type of cory's instead of "mixed types". I've found that most fish normally only school with their own species. Even though they're all called cory's, I bet they won't really school together but I've never tried so maybe I'm wrong. But I'd definitely get that live rock out of there before you even think about putting fish in the tank.  

Another suggestion is to add the fish slowly, don't just go to the LFS and buy all these fish at once. And if you're getting a half moon betta id get that last when you're sure the tank is good and established. Betta's are normally really hardy fish but the last half moon betta I bought was like fifteen dollars and I'd hate to see you lose fifteen bucks on one fish right out the gate.

Yikes! get that live rock outta that tank.  probably gotta start from scratch now, make sure you clean everything after having that stuff in there. 

 

If your dirting your tank make sure you watch dustinsfishtanks videos on youtube.  Dirt is easy but you still need a bit of knowledge before hand.  make sure you get easy plants to start, java moss, java fern, ect..(java=easy). 

 

Remember, if this is your first tank, unfortunatly it probably wont turn out to be your "Dream Tank".  that'll take time to come after you make many mistakes and learn many lessons ^^

SORRY GUYS FOR THE TYPING ERROR I MEANT ROCK BUT I WAS THINKING ABOUT PLANTS AND ADDED LIVE TO OCK I KNOW NOT TO PUT LIVE ROCK IN A SALTWATER TANK THXS FOR YOUR CONCERN.

Something that I don't think anyone has mentioned but might help, if you're that sort of person, is to go to the library and see if you can find a good book on the subject. Years ago when I started thinking about setting up an aquarium I had the good fortune to find a really good book that covered just about everything in the hobby.  Reading books will inspire and give you a better chance of not making too many mistakes...
