I am planning on upgrading from a 10g to a 40B or 55 gallon planted.

I want to use dirt but I can't find a good source of what the best method is. I want to keep it relatively cheap.

From what I have read MTS is very good and black beauty blasting sand is a good cheap substrate.

Would it work if I capped MTS with Black Beauty sand?

also is a normal 55 gallon hard to scape since it is only 12-13" deep?

here is a drawing of what I am going for. A 40B would be much more expensive but if it would look much nicer in the end I am willing to invest. Which one should I go with?

^I am going to have large plants on one side with a long thin piece of bogwood stretching out over a more open area of dwarf sag and hair grass with a large rock surrounded by small flat rocks on the other side

Any help is appreciated thanks.

use miracle grow organic choice for your dirt its like 3 or 4 buck for a bag and with a 40-55 gall you would only need about 2 bags of it. I also see that you wanted sand.. it isnt really the best to cap the dirt especially if you want your plants to grow. The sand tends to pack the dirt down more and doesnt really let it like "breath". go with a finer gravel that still gives it a sand look but is still gona allow plants to grow. Good Luck bro it looks good so far
