I'm looking for a place to buy GloFish Danios... I understand that Petsmart carries them on occasion in the green, red and orange.  I was wondering if anyone else sold them.... I love the blue and purple.  I noticed that Live Aquarium.com sold them, but they were quite expensive after shipping. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=830+881+3026&...

If I were to breed them, where could I sell them exactly?

Check ur LFS not the big chain pet stores ie: petco petsmart. Also because they are genetically modified fish people tend not to get them, so they tend to be hard to find at times. Or u can Try asking your LFS if they can order a few in for you some places do that not all but it doesn't hurt to ask. If u do breed them u can try and sell them to ur local fish store not petco or petsmart they don't accept/buy fish from reg people. Or u can do what live aquaria is doing and sell them online, on ebay, etc.

Not sure where you can get them but I've heard it's near impossible to breed them as they have modified them so that the only glo fish that breed are in the lab.

I'm pretty sure breeding them is illegal, as there is a patent on them.

Bummer... Thanks for telling me, I actually saw something about that earlier. Maybe that's just in California.

They are  genetically engineered. Meaning 99.9% of them are sterile and unable to breed and the rare case they do breed, the fry come out like a normal zebra (not illegal, cause you cant patent a breeding process of a fish. the chemicals they are modified with are natural fluorescent colors found in corals and jelly fish and are toxic to other fish and small animals over time. Like radiation. The process of modifying the fish is patented.) Check out glofish.com for buying, and reading the toxicity report, and they are illegal in some states do to the toxic coloring.

they are illegal in the UK. We think its cruel to genetically modify fish

In most circumstances, I also believe that fish should be left in their natural state as much as possible...  It could become a huge problem if released into the wild.

they are illegal in Cali. and it is illegal to breed in all states because they are patented. I got mine from Petco. They have them in stock regularly, same with petsmart. At least in WA.

Yeah. Definately a big ethical question surrounding the production of these fish. Theres so many great fish out there with bright natural colours that i don't believe theres any need for genetically modyfying fish. Makes me feel i little queezy looking at them. But each to their own

all they did was include a gene from a jellyfish and put it in the embryo, no harm to the fish. petco has all the colors for glofish.
