I was looking for some south american fish that would go well with Angel fish. My tank is a 40 gallon amazon planted tank is a south-american community tank. I was thinking of a school of rummy nose tetras, would these work and what are some other good fish for my tank?

Corydoras, neon tetras (bigger ones preferrably), emperor tetras look awesome beside angelfish because both have long finnage :). In general just try to avoid fish that can get nippy unless you have a lot of plant cover. Some examples would be serpae tetras and black widows (thats the textbook ans although I have kept them with my angelfish.).
I have mine in with a school of congo tetras and they do very well. I have another tank with an assortment of tetras including the rummy nose tetras
I would go for blue rams, any tetra would look nice as well.
Keyhole Cichlids, Cleithracara maronii, are natural companions to Angels in the wild and are very peaceful. Cardinal Tetras likewise.
I know that Festivums school with Angels in the wild and large Angels feed on small neons in the wild.
Obviously you should any avoid large aggressive cichlids - they don't get along with any one! Add fish and see what happens. Sometimes the most peaceful fish will decide to feed on Angelfish fins and sometimes peaceful fish that are breeding will terrorize the Angels.
