Soft, mineral-poor water wipes out algae. Switching over to rainwater softens your water. (Place a barrel underneath your gutter system if you have one) Distilled water and RO water are also mineral poor. Adding floating plants like water lettuce or duckweed sucks minerals out of the water. Or you can also switch to low-light plants like Anubias,ferns, and Crypts. Low light discourage algae.
Just remember algae likes the same conditions that plants do. In mineral poor water most plants need a rich substrate or they'll suffer the same fate as the algae.
Yeah, I see it now. I don't keep saltwater tanks - sorry.
