In my 46g bowfront dirted and planted tank, my male angel is acting very strange. He just face the back of the tank and breathing fast. He doesn't shows any sign of sickness. I just feed the tank some frozen white mosquito larva and he just ignore the food and continue to look at the back of the tank, breathing fast. The other fish in the tank are doing great, my female angel and my group of rainbowfish. I treated the tank for ich before I left for vacation. when I came back, i found him acting weird while the rest of the fish are fine. the temperature is at 83*F from last week ich treatment. I did a waterchange on friday afternoon before I left. What should I do? Any idea what is going on with my male angel?

Check out my blog on my sick angels. should be on my page, sickly angels I believe is what I called it. See if any symptoms seem to match what happened to mine. They started off like yours, but then clamped their fins, developed a crazy looking slim coat thingy, and would twitch and dart for no reason. All the other fish, including Neon tetras were fine. I got them to survive by putting them in my hospital tank with Melafix, salt, antibioctics, and a temp closer to 90*F. Left them in there, feeding them small amounts, for two weeks; and now they look better then they did before. I believe it was the antibiotics, salt, and temp that cured them. I threw the Melafix in just because I had some.
Thanks a lot. I will keep an eye on my fish.
Its possible some sort of item or spray fumes were inhaled by the angel, or a small internal parasite. Do an immediate 75-90 percent water change and see if it helps, and look up on internal parasites, especially early stages.
The antibiotics I used were from petsmart, made by API. Just basic antibiotics, they are even safe for humans. Tastes gross, but fixed my wisdom tooth infection... dont ask... lol. Like I said, I think thats what saved my two angels; plus the salt. I figure a freshwater disease can't live in salt.
I forgot to say that I did at least a 50% water change a day, and kept the salt and antibiotic levels constant. Its been about a month since they got sick, and they look so much better, fuller fins, brighter color, and just the over all look of them is 100% better; even before they were sick.
Could be damage to the gills or heart. Humans who have damage to their lungs (emphysema) or heart (corroded arteries) have to gasp for oxygen just like your Angel. Fish diseases aren't that different from human diseases and are often caused by the same things: too much fat leads to poor circulation and/or organs failing and too much chloramine can burn gills the same way cigarette smoke burns our lungs.
It could very well be a parasite though. Turbo has some recent hands-on experience and actually succeeded in saving his Angel - so far. Wish I could be of more help but unless its an common disease, I usually end up with a dead fish.
So far? lol I know they are fine now, looking better than before.
Sadly, he die today. I just woke up and he was floating. Yesterday, his stomach was huge/bloated even larger than my female with eggs. I did a 50% waterchange and tried to feed him some NLS Thera A but he just ignore the food. The night before he died, the female was trying to comfort him by bumping into him, trying to make him swim. I have add him for over a year now. I rescued him and his girl from a ten gallon thank with 10 other angels and 4 severums
I hate when that happens.
Last I heard on Aquarimax is that they were "improving". Glad everything's fine. I'm surprised the anti-biotic worked to be honest. I'm gonna order some online based on your experience. I recently lost a Discus, Betta, and female Guppy that were fed some bad earthworms. The "Canadian Nightcrawlers" and "Alabama Jumpers" are ok, but I suspect the "Redworms" (Eisensis Foetida sp?) carry harmful pathogens.
By the way, I met an interesting guy at the Boston Aquarium Society meeting last month - he's been to Venezuela 18 times on tropical fish expeditions. Guy knows damn near everything about tropical fish - pretty amazing.
