How to make rocks and driftwood safe for aquarium.

How do you make rocks that you find outside safe for your aquarium? I have heard people say to boil them but that can be dangerous. Is it ok to just bring them in and scrub them with a brush or sponge? Maybe throw a little lemon juice on them to see if it fizzes and will change the ph in your tank? The same goes for driftwood. That stuff costs too much money when I can go outside and get it for free. What do you guys think?
