dirt would help it grow faster but since u don't have ...go for liquid ferts

shaking my head......look at other peoples tanks.  Write down things about them that you like, or want to expand on in your own tank.  Do this for a long while......then try put your own spin on it.  As a rule of thumb, I would place taller plants at the back and maybe sides of the tank, medium height plants in the middle, and short growing plants, or no plants in the front.  Use rocks and wood creatively to try to capture what you think would look best, and then use your plants as a supporting role.  Or you could choose to only have plants in the tank.  Do a little research on the plants you have, find out their requirements.  Different plants have different needs, such as lighting, fertilization, and if CO2 is needed to keep them successfully.  Select your plants based on the lighting system you have.  Most aquariums come with a standard florescent light now days, which is good for plants that like less light.  If you upgrade the light, as many of us have, you can then branch out and try plants that need bright light.  Its really all about creating balance in your tank.  Balance in the asthetics of it, meaning it has to look pleasing to you, you are the one who is going to be looking at it every day.  Balance between the plants and their placement in the aquascape, and incorporating them in with other hardscape materials, like rocks and wood.  Balance between the colors of everything, including the substrate, plants, hardscape and fish.  Balance in the amount of fish you put in there, and how much you feed them and how the plants use up the waste, and doing your water changes.  It is all about maintaining balance in all manners, as is in life.  Keeping aquariums helps me maintain my mental balance.  It is a killer hobby, don't get discouraged.  Do a little research, and the ideas will start flowing.  Feel free to message me and bounce any ideas around.

Thanks for the replies. just need to keep the plants alive long enought to decide what i want to do scape wise.

hey you should take a look at my tank, i kinda started mine the same way like 8 months ago. i have no dirt only use t8 lighting and use barely any ferts, but i do have  diy co2

not saying ferts and dirt arent good. 

 

but you should put the taller plants in the back, Shorter plants up front, maybe add some rocks/driftwood for the scape

don't worry id bet that almost all of us has our own stupid stories its apart of the hobby. remember you will always want to better you tank cuz the hobby is always changing. but you got light and a filter sounds good all you need is dirt. i would do your research find what you want and dirt your tank. iv tried to go advanced and what not with no prob but just find it easier to go simple. idk this probably didn't help but if you wanna chat more specificly id be happy to help just let me know
