If sand suffocates roots, what about the beneficial bacteria?

One of my tanks is a dirty sandy tank, which I would like to change to gravel but have spent so much money in the hobby already, I'm going broke! Is it bad for my fish though?

No it's fine as long as you disturb the sand. There are other threads on the subject.
