I just got a pair of Julidochromis Ornatus, I think they are more commonly called "Golden Julies", and I was hoping that someone on here had some experience with keeping them and could give me some pointers.

It's been a while since I've kept cichlids, and I've never kept dwarf ones. I'm hoping I have a male/female pair as I'm looking to get into breeding them. I bought them very young, so it's hard to sex them.

I'm looking for pointers on breeding mostly, but also just general tips on how to keep them happiest.

You can have a look at my page to see a video of them if you want to see my set up.

Thanks!

I would say a higher PH/Hardness water and with my Juli Reganis I create rock piles with a void in them for a home so to speak. I would also go with a sandy type substrate since they do seem to dig around when they are getting ready to breed and its a neat behavior to watch. Its also good to have a break in the line of sight if you have multiple fish in there trying to get a pair so any rejected ones can take refuge until they are rehomed.

Other then that a quality food with skipping day a week to purge them and I do weekly 50% water changes although it may not be needed each week. They dont seem to bother my plants at all as well so you would be able to add some if you would like.

Hope this helps you out some.
