Hello all, its been a while since my last post. I started a new 20 gallon planted tank after a failed 10 gallon attempt. My 20 gallon consists of about 3 total inches of subsrate. about an 1.5 inches of scotss organic top soil and an 1inch or so of black aquarium gravel (except for one corner where I added sand to contrast the gravel). The difference in this tank is I have little money invested. And by that I mean, I have 2 CFL bulbs. 6500K and 23 watts each. for the plants I simply took some from the lake my grandma has a cottage on. I have what is my understanding, Vallisneria americana (jungle val), what looks to be elodea, dwarf lilly pads, pennywort, some other long grass plant, and another lily of some sort that sends out broad heart shaped leaves underwater. It has been set up for almost a week. No fish yet. I see no new growth on anything but pennywort, and lillies. I am just curious as to what I should do next. This is my trial aquarium as dirt to see if it will be worth dirting my 29 gallon. I do have a light fixture for the 29 gallon just will need to know lighting and if I would be better off getting a different substrate for that. Also what plants to use, because I was planning on buying some for that tank. I have some crypts that are doing well in a bowl at my window. or at least staying alive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to stock my 20 with guppies, cory cats, and maybe one larger fish as a center piece. Or maybe some barbs. Im looking to breed in the tank.
