New dirted 20 gallon

Got 20 gallon high dirted got a couple questions , one is about the light I was wondering about a daylight CFL just don't want it to be too much so I don't mess with the balance and get algea. And another questions is if you can use pool filter sand on top of the dirt or is gravel better? And third still kinda lost with te Co2 I'm not sure if the fish will give off enough co2 for the plants trying to make the tank balanced . And any advice for beginner plants is awesome.

I'm a rookie this is the first time doing a planted tank and advice or tips would be cool.
