I use pool filter sand in all my tanks. It is not sharp, easily cleaned, and totally inert. The only problem that I have with it is that it must be stirred-up every so often to prevent dead spots (black sand). For this reason, I don't think it would be the best option for capping dirt. Some use it with no problems, however. I am planning my first dirt tank soon. But, I think I am going with brown aquarium gravel, as a cap, so that I don't have to disturb the substrate any more than necessary.
