I hear all freshwater tanks do well with a bit of salt, and that salt is a kind of tonic for fish.
I know mollies love it, I know that between freshwater and saltwater we have brackish water.
What I have not been able to find is a definite idea about salting tanks....
I'm new to this (TOTALLY hooked by the way. It's ridiculous) and at first the idea of putting salt into my tank was incomprehensible.
Now it's starting to make a LOT of sense.
If any of y'all have knowledge and experience about this, I would thoroughly appreciate hearing what you have to say.
really, any information about additives in general, and how important they are to the health/happiness of your tank.
But more specifically...SALT?!  In a freshwater tank?!

Hey

I have a 90 Gal  salted freswater aquaium and yes it is still very out of the nrom for some .. I have been salting mine for about 6 mo now( about one TBS per 10 Gal or freswater) and have seen vast improvement on fish and overall display of my aquarium ... I started salting because I did alot of research and found that a little bit of salt will help gill function, adds electrolytes , kills algae, kills parasites and actually helps with balancing the benificial bacteria in filters ... so I say awesome try it out you will love it ... be sure to research the right amount of salt for your aquarium ..  you dont want brackish wich is close to 1 TBS per 5 gal of freshwater ... let me know how it goes for you !!!

Awesome info thanks.  I think the mollies REALLY appreciate the salt.  I've noticed the male's color improve as well
As his demeanor....he is more flashy and shows off for
Me.  fish are a trip!   Just got some Anubias too....
Soooo, yes to salt.  The hard water fish like it a lot.  I am still very curious about how angels and tetras respond. I doubt it will be as noticeable as with the mollies.
ALSO, I notice a correlation between my salting the tank and....
1 Eggs on ghost shrimp
2 Birth of Molly fry
I may be wrong though
I should say, I'm not salting the angels, but am
Very curious as to whether they might like it

i havent use salt in my tank for while a long time. I will use it in my QT tank but that is far as it goes.

Plus salt do lower o2 level so you need air stone to give oxygen.

I was wondering about that,Thanks.
 Oxygen...definitely need to get oxygen...ated....ization....ized...
Airstone?  Or just another pump?
Getting to the factors now, tho, ie,
OXYGEN in water decreases
as SALINITY rises.
Right?

ive been adding salt to my tank for bout a year now,,, i got an outbreak of ick in my tank and the lady at one of my lfs told me that along with the ick medication to use AQARIUM salt in my tank and to keep using salt in my tank, i did and havent looked back since,,, but remember salt doesnt evaporate only add it if you have done a water change

i have been putting salt in my tanks since i started the hobby (abt 6 months ago). i researched all about it, and it really helped. i first started using salts in august when i had to fight off a fungal infection on a gourami (who recently died but beat the fungus within a week of treatment) now, i salt with every water change. my fish are active, healthy, and vivacious!

I think I read somewhere that salt will kill your plants is this true? I was salting my tank until I switched from fake to real plants. Now I'm battling a hair algae uprising. If salt will reduce the algae and not harm my plants or angels I would start using it again.

yes typically salt isnt best for plants .... however I have seen some salted tanks with beautiful plants growing abundantly ... but I will say it will be much harder to keep them healthy .. good substrate ... good fertalizers ... and would recommend C02 ... the salinity in a salted freshwater tank really isnt enough do really even measure but the presence of it in the habbitat bring all kind a supplemental benifits ... I would say if you are trying to have a beautiful planted tank .. I would stay away from salt ...it can be done just more of a hassle ...
