Hey guys,

I was just wanted to get a good suggestion and/or recommendation on a filter for my reef tank that im about to start..Would a good heavy duty 3-stage canister filter do well? Because ive been doing a little research and i read great things about some of em but since im gonna be runnin a 30 gallon is it necessary for a sump and skimmer as well?

depends on what your doing sammy, if your wanting a reef then a refugium setup would be best but with just fish and live rocky a 3 stage canister should be fine, heck almost any filter besides the crappy stock filters would be fine if your not having anything that requires pristine water.  A protein skimmer is not necessary but do work great and help a tremendous amount at keeping nitrates down i use them with a combination of a clean up crew 1 blue legged hermit and assorted variety of snail per gallon.

well i must be confused i just want live rock and a few fish but what if i want a few corals and anemones?

If you want a few coral and anemones I would convert a HOB filter to a Refugium.  There are videos on how to do this on youtube if you want to make one.

hmmm its best to decide what your going to do before doing it with reefs because most fish are not able to cooperate with corals. and be careful on anemones and corals as your tank just breaks the barrier of nano and anemones may still yet get to and sting your corals.
