sand or gravel

hey guys, i have a 75 g planted tank and i currently have sand. the thing is the sand sometimes mixes in with the dirt when planting and like dustin says it doesnt seem to get air to the roots so the plants can grow. i noticed in my rotala that it only looks like the top 2inches is really growing. after that besides new sprouts its just a darker dead looking green. it did fine in my 45 gallon im just wondering if gravel instead of sand will help as i have a huge bucket of gravel 3mm at my disposal. also i am running two 54 watt t5s 6500k and a little co2
