Stained water? Help!

I dirted my 20 long and left the filter off for about a week (no idea why!) And the water finally settled. I then turned the filter back on and it all screwed up again. The water is 10 times worse. I have about an inch of dirt about half an inch of gravel. It is not doing anything at all.

What kind of dirt did you use? If you used miracle grow (the small white and green bags), thats plant food not plant soil. If you haven't tried it already, the organic miracle grow potting soil in the large orange and white bag works great. Based on your clarity problem, thats my best guess.

Whatever is staining the water will eventually dissipate with water changes. If you've got a big tank the Python (water change kit) makes it easy to do water changes. Or, if you like, just siphon it out yourself with a tube and bucket(s).

Sounds like you didn't cap thick enough, always have a the sme amount of gravel as dirt and a minimum cap of 1" lots of water changes should help

Cap it with more gravel, you should have an inch and make sure the gravel pebbles are small otherwise the dirt will keep leaching up into the aquarium. So add another half inch of gravel and do some big water changes. Should solve your problem
