What would make a good tank mate to go along with tiger barbs? I'm planning out a 40g planted tank, and am thinking about doing tiger barbs and perhaps a red-tailed shark. But other than that i don't know what else would go well with them, other than another type of barb. I know not to add anything with long fins like an angel or anything slow like a gourami. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

instead of barb..you can go with tetras and cory if u like

it's a bit hard to decide what goes best with tiger as they can become nippy.

I have 9 tiger barbs, and a variety of other fish. As long as u keep a big school of them you shouldn't have any trouble. I have tetras, a gourami and others, and the tigers have been fine. Hope that helps
I have Tiger Barbs with RTS, Panda Barbs, Gouramis and a Pleco. Gouramis can be fast if they want to. Look for small baby T-Barbs if your worried about it.
if you want something less nippy and aggressive... try cherry barbs. they look good one they are established. their reddish color will help bring out the greens in a planted tank.  The males are super red and during breeding they darken in colors when they try to impress females.  they nip a lil bit but keep it in their own species. they are pretty easy to get breeding too.
i have 8 tiger barbs with a pearl gourami  and 2 blue rams in my 40g
