My wife got a few pairs of guppies some 6 months ago and now I have a population explosion. Any idea on how to reduce the numbers? I have taken several hundred to the local pet store, they seem to take them with no problem, I am just tired of all of them all the time. I am thinking of getting rid of the whole tank because it has lost a lot of it's appeal. It used to be a beautiful living piece of art, now it is like a ghetto. Any ideas? Thanks.

Remove all the females. Or add another species of fish that will eat the babies. A few tetras or small cichlids maybe. I have kept guppies with pea puffers to provide the puffs with extra food, however you never know how puffers will respond to the adult guppies-they can be fin nippers and killers, however mine seem to be fine with guppies. You could always give away all the guppies and start fresh.......
I took in probably 125 today and cleaned the tank hoping I got rid of all the females and lots of the new babies. After putting everything back in place I found a couple of large females and I guess I will be doing it again next week. I do also have some Blue Goriamis some cat fish and a few neons. Any suggestions of what fish to use to rid the tank of babies that will be here soon that won't eat the rest?
This is often a common problem with hardy live bearers. I would suggest separation of the sexes. You could then make just a couple more trips to the pet store to reduce your population.
Here's what you do, get a soft shell turtle, they love eating those fry. Also mollys, platies, cichlids, and even angel fish will go after them, so you could do that. You could also get another tank, grow the fry and then sell them. You could sell them for a buck each, that's really really cheap and most people with an aquarium would be happy to take them off your hands. Good luck!!
But softshell turtles need a really big aquarium
Add some other fish that are compatible with the adults, but won't eat the babies, basically any community fish. Don't tear a tank down just cos of a easily solved problem
