ya the fish r doing fine and the plants all standing up. just cheap top soil store brand 1" and black graval 1"

Another thing to consider in your filter is a 'cleaning pad'.  That's what they call them in the canister form factor.  Those do wonders as well.

 

I would also recommend that you TURN YOUR FILTER OFF while your draining and replenish slowly.  Some filters based on the kind you have will churn things up as the water level drops.
