My tank has been dirted since Nov 2011.
Have flora glo 48 inch, 40 watt bulb and a life glo 48 inch, 40 watt bulb on my 75 gal tank.
I used the miracle grow organic dirt suggested but I didn't put anything else in the dirt like iron nails or clay.
Actually I did put my left over 20 bag flourite layer over my dirt before i capped it with caribsea peace river gravel. The flourite was over 7 years old and rinsed pretty heavy, so not sure if any minerals were left in it.
My plants are growing but I wouldn't say they all look awesome. Some of the jungle val looks like it is getting cuts in the center of the leave, and these are new leaves that looked like they were growing.
No matter how easy people say water wisteria is to grow mine isn't grow so hot anymore, the leaves are all thin and looking weak.
Some of the new java fern leaves have weird discolored tips. Some of the tips are darker than the rest of the leaves.
I thought the dirt would take care of everything. So not sure if I screwed up by not putting clay, so now i have to add some flourish ferts or something for the java fern. Or even root tabs for my rooted plants.
Also do i need to run my eheim filter, i already raised the suction tube thing so it isn't as close to the substrate. Someone mentioned all the fish poop and dying plants should be left on the substrate to replenish it.
So I'm thinking do i even need to run my filter because it is still sucking up a lot of junk in my tank overtime...junk that could have been left in the tank to replenish the soil?
Should I just put in an airstone to keep the water moving? Or if i take the filter out that would also get rid of the many good bacteria that i have growing in the huge canister/bacteria media.

I was under the understanding that flourite was all minerals; I thought it was made of clay itself. Anyway how deep is your soil; deep enough? I wonder if your roots are working on being established. I had this aponagetton bulb that did crap for like two months; it was super crunk. Now it is starting to show good leaves and lots of them. I run my fluval and I would never not run it; because of the bio filter issue but also I think the fish dig it. I would wait it out, do water changes, and run the filter.
