My best is to know what type of fish you are looking for. I made a big mistake I thought by getting tropical fish. I don't think they are all that active. Now I have some African cichlids and is as happy as can be.

Do weekly or bi-weekly water changes of at least 20 percent.  Use warmed treated water.  I keep 5 gallon buckets in the garage with heaters and airators for water changes...

 

reserch before you buy and always use water conditioner

take it slow fish tanks are like cars the faster you go the harder you will crash

agreed take it slow do lots of reaserch especaily on the specific species you want and there compadability with other fish these tips are what have got me to have great success with saltwater and freshwater fish, Hope this helps.

cheap usually ends up being costly. try and save money where you can but dont compromise quality

patience and take your time plan everything out
