You can salt the tank if you want.  I never have because certain parasites will build up a resistance to it.  Salt can be used very effectively for the treatment of ich, etc.  A lot of problems can be helped with a .3% salinity.  You can salt up to .6% salinity for really stubborn parasites.  Filtration is key with goldfish.

 

Others may be able to answer better than me, but I think the plants would have more of an issue with the salt than the fish.

I just started planting and dirt and noticed on the salt box not to use on plants so I just lower the amount of salt.... For me so far so good time will tell but I've read people lowering there salt dosage without and problems time will tell

My experience with the saly comes from my koi pond.  Salt became widely used at the wholesale level as prevention against parasites.  I have had to go the the higher salinity levels to get rid of stuff that I used to be able to wipe out with a .3% level.  I like being able to use the salt to get rid of things, because it is less stressful to the fish and the bio filter.
