How large is the pond?  and the filtration media consist of what?

Hey dave, it's not massive. I think it's about 1000litres, 3 feet at its deepest part. Wanted it fairly deep, cold winters and it gets a bit of sun. Water changes come in the form of rain mostly, it's hooked up to the guttering on the house, then the overflow waters the garden.

As for media, it's a little bit of everything. In the top there's an inch of foam topped with filter floss, and a packet of carbon at the moment (lots of tanins in the water from soil). After that we have a chamber of bio balls (emerged obviously), then under that submerged biohome ultra. Seems to do pretty well, never had any issues with ammonia or smelly pond. Bloody loads of mosquito larvae though!

more water movement will help with mosquitos.  Another way to deal with larvae is having small fish like guppies or other fish that eat small things.  bettas are fine for that as well or any fish fry.   you can also use schooling fish if you want them in the pong.  mollys are good with that as well
