Hey people new here and wanting you expert opinions on this, i have a 45 gallon with good filtration and such stock consists of 1 whiptail pleco 1 Raphael cat and my two problems a Jack Dempsey and Green terror there not huge or anything yet about 4 inches right now. I only being in this hobby for 3 years and only dealing cichlids for about 1 year realize that a jack and terror will become to big in a matter of a year or so. But thats not my main problem, There incredibly antisocial and hid when ever anyone walks in the room. Sometimes with me they stay out but any moving of the arms and there gone. So im mainly looking for a solution to this if ya'll got nothing then i guess ill "reinvent" the tank. Any suggestions are welcome.
I had a blood parrot that would do the same thing. But now they know I am the hand that feeds them so they stay out. Occasionally it will dart behind a piece of driftwood, but with some slow movements and getting used to me, it's not so bad. It would even nip at me when I would do water changes, but now I can have my hand in there and no issues. So, patience, tender loving care, and numerous little snacks will bring out their character.
Alright sounds like a plan do think having people come into my room more often help at all?
I think it would be best to take it slow at first with just you standing around the tank. Is your tank in an area with a lot of foot traffic?
Okay and No not really its in my bedroom and i only go in there to look at the fish, clean and sleep haha
I'm glad you're not keeping these aggressive cichlids in community tanks. They're very territorial and in the closed confines of a tank they can kill other fish. But I'm sure you already know this.
They become less shy once they begin associating you with food.
I have had cichlids for many years and currently have 10 to 12 peacocks, blood parrots and 2 blue hasp. I agree with time, they are extremely smart fish and will learn your behavior. When I come around the tank or anyone they all come out to greet me or others. When I turn the lights on they all come out thinking its feeding time. Try leaving lights out and turn them on when feeding, dont over feed and they will begin to look for lights coming on time to come out and feed.
