Looking into DIY cfl setup for a 29gal planted tank. Plan on lo tech med light setup for the time with plans to upgrade as I get more familiar with the hobby. Would appreciate any info on number of bulbs and configuration that I may have succes with. Even any two cents on the thought of going this route!!

U will need like 2-3 cfl bulbs to get to med light. Make sure they are 6500k I have some on my nanos and they work great jus get some clip on lamps and ur done. http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/53632/FC23-FEIIS23W64.html?tid=car
Notice how it says 23w but then says 100w equvalent ( really powerful bulbs)

Thanks for the info !! I was way off was going to do six fixtures with 23w bulbs! Was kind of concerned with getting even light through out the whole tank

just to throw it out there.... larger cfls do exist in like 100w ones that are equivalent to 500w they are a little pricy but not too bad when you think you only need one as opposed to 3 or 4 of the smaller ones.... http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/54678/FC100-35844.html?utm_source=...    keep in mind their size though if your building your own hood. goodluck

I made mine for a 20gal long using 4 cfls, each cfl has its own timer, as to ramp up the daylight and ramp back down... black out --> blue moon light --> 300watt cfl --> Verlux & UVB -->and back down to black out. I also use reflective heat tape on the inside of hood.

1 Westinghouse large cfl 300watt equivalent 65000K (thing is about 1ft in length, mogul base)

1 Verlux cfl 100watt equivalent full spectrum plant light.

1 desert terrarium cfl 100watt equivalent UVB light.

1 Blue cfl 60watt equivalent.

all bulbs can be purchased at any big box hardware (UVB bulb might need a big box petshop)

I figure more types of variety of light spectrums  is like feeding a well balanced diet to your fish.

With that being said my canopy is almost the same size dimensions as the 20gal long.  Will get some pics for ya shortly.

How ever you go at, best of luck, and have fun with it!
