there are 4 basic ways to get co2 in your water. These different ways can work together. 

1. Ambient co2 from air equalizing with the co2 in your water.

2. Dissolved organic compounds (in the form of humic acid, bioload, and decomposing plants)

3. CO2 reactor (using yeast/sugar mix)

4. Pressurized CO2 (most consistent CO2 injection and cost effective when achieving 30ppm)

Fish exhale Co2 like humans and other animals.  Plants produce Co2 when the lights are off. Like LED said, Co2 enters water from the air although air holds a lot more Co2 than water. That's why most plant species exist on land rather than in water.

from DIY Co2 to Co2 injection into your tank, just do a you tube search and see how's it's done.  a lot of good vids out there
