Can someone help me with my new 125. I am wondering how deep of a bed of soil i need and how deep of gravel. Also what kind of lighting should i use. And is there a plant to fish ratio? someone please help me! And what is best for filtration hang on the back or canister?

Plants: As much as you can let grow out in the tank. When you setup the tank- have lots of plants for you initial planting- trust me this will reduce a lot of troubles for you during the first few months.

Fish: Well, you can basically gradually stock the tank till the fish waste accumulates at rate that gets close to equal with the amount that the plants take those nitrates from the water. But you will probably have a tank that looks damn full before you reach that point if your plant growth is lush enough.

Filtration: There's not one distinctly better than the other. The best would be a combo. A Cannister filled with biomedia to convert ammonias to nitrate (plant food) and a HOB to hold carbon and Filter Floss (polishing sponges) or other medias that need frequent rinsing or replacing.
