The website is fine and informative, it's just the spam! I'm getting really frustrated with this,so I'm starting a petition! Everyone and anyone needs to like this, so that way we can bring this to Dustin's attention! I realize Dustin is trying but it doesn't seem to be helping. So, with your guys help we can make a petition to allow certain people to be banned from Fish Tank Tv. I realize that this would be gigantic and a HUGE reponsability, but something must be done to stop spam on forums and discussions/blogs! Thank you for your time and remember to like this discussion in order to bring this to Dustin's attention! Lets hope this "petition" helps!!

Sincerely, A long time User for 2-3 years,
Hunter Dail

Me too an I've been asking Dustin to give a mod or 2 power to ban. Not just the ability erase post. Hell the bots post every 6 -13 min an just like Dustin I'm pretty sure the mods can't be on 24-7 sooo good idea hunter on petition lets make this happen to save the site

Its unfortunate but just as a previous admin said, untill the signup process is changed then we will always have spam and new bots all the time.  If you ban one, another is put in its place.  there is no way to get around this without changing the sites signup process.

I think we can make a bot that can automatic ban spammers.

the issue there would be programming it.  then programming it to know what is spam or not spam, which would mean you have to make the bot to have the ability to make a judgement call on a post. Almost all bots i have seen, bot programs i have researched  and bot programs i have used do NOT have that ability lol.  Interesting idea but would be too difficult to implement.  Easier to simply change the sign up process.  Sorry for  being realistic and raining on your parade =(

Just need to delete the spammer's accounts. Being a Java, C++, & VBasic programmer myself, a programmed “bot” to rid spam would take a long time to make; the problem with it would be a lot of fish related post would end up deleted; the app would need more monitoring then the site, and a lot of mad users. If you want to get into "why" a program can’t control spam hit me up. But here are a few: You would have to sit there and program every single word the app needed to look for, any fish related posts with those words would get deleted, spammers would start missing spelling the banned worlds…

They need to set up a monitoring system, with real (volunteer) people, so when you post a blog or a post it has to be "approved," yes that would mean that your posts would not post right away, but you can blame the spammers for that. Changing the sign up process would not solve anything. Spammers are real people just like you and I, they get paid by copying and pasting a certain amount of posts a week. How do you think they get past the distorted crazy word thing? (Yes, that’s the technical term.) Even if you added a "by signing up you agree to not post spam, or suffer legal action" check box, you still will have spam.

Great info Turbo, glad you chimed in. unfortunately the only thing i can do is restrict people from posting.  its either only admins can start posts, or all can start posts.  there's no  aprroval method programmed into this site.  if we could modify that (which we can if dustin lets us) then we'd be happy campers

It'll take 2 seconds to add the html code so that the posts are emailed to an admin for them to review before allowing it to go public. Its the only way to stop spam. That's why there is over 10,000 (in 2006, more now a days) people working for Google (Just the website). Why do they need over 10,000 employees to run a website? to montior spam and such. Just saying. You can chase down and delete the posts and accounts but wont rid the site of it. It's like algae. LOL
