So yesterday morning I did my regular water change and tank maintanance on my 40g and 20g.
This morning I wake up and flip on my lights like I would any other day. I come back to check out the 20 and make sure everything is working out well after moving some wood and plants the day before. I notice two things; 1) my serpaes are 'blood' red and 2) both them and the neons are swimming and chasing each other around like crazy. Then to my surprise a spray of neon tetra eggs float right past the front of the glass. Turns out both groups of tetras were breeding. I doubt there will be any survivors since the corys seem to be enjoying the morning "feeding".
Just goes to show the power of a water change.
You got that right Anthony. I'm currently breeding Discus and Blue Rams but this would never happen without water changes. I think Peter's right about your water being soft - not saying they won't breed in hard water but it seems less likely.
Most of our fishes come from rivers where the water is constantly being changed. Old water goes out to the ocean / New water comes in from the rain and mountains. Fish need new fresh water or they will die. Although plants and beneficial bacteria help keep water clean, they don't do enough. The best filter is your municipal water system. and the best river is your faucet.
