That's your call. Guppies are great - some of them are pretty high-end. Mollies and Swordtails are good too. Bettas and angelfish make good pets. But its really up to you.

I have enjoyed Columbia Tetras. They can grow to 3 inches. They have striking red fins, they school, they're though and resilient. I've have some in my tank that are six years old.

i just started up a 55 gallon, i got a small school of silver tip tetras, they are bigger and hardier then other types of tetras, and super active. just dont mix then with very peaceful fish like neon tetras or glowlight tetras, they might pick on them

I've got 6 Congo tetras, 6 glass cats, 7 hatchets, 7 neon's, 7 black neon's, 4 rummy nose, 4 dwarf rainbows, a male ram and 2 cory cats in my 60 corner planted tank. There may be a dwarf african frog in there too but I haven't seen him in a while. Most these fish can be bought on sale if you watch adds and are patient.

Apistos are very cool fish if you have soft water.

Like Robert Jango said above Guppies are probably the way to go in a 55. Stock it with about 30-40 different colors and types of the high-end Guppies, Mollies, and Swordtails for sure. And if you wanna add some contrast get some really big goldfish to go with them. Bettas... yeah those are cool too but they are high maintenance. Always wanting you to feed them and look at them wave their long gorgeous fins around like they own the place. Psh, no thanks. But its really up to you.

All trolling aside though, here's what I have in my 55 gallon. Plus I've since added 6 Torpedo Barbs. Enjoy:

Gourami's are a great fish for something bigger like your 55g. They're pretty cheap, theyve got a lot of character. we have a 40 gallon with emperor tetras and a pair of Pearl Gouramis. Gourami's are the way to go for a focal fish in a nice calm tank. IMHO
