Where's Dustin?  Has he been abducted by Shining Path rebels? Should we call the American Embassy in Peru? Maybe we should all chip in and send a Care package to the Peruvian jungle.

My local fish store importer said Altums live in the tributaries of the Orinoco near the Columbian-Venezuelan border. I'm not sure if they're found anywhere else.  We have a trade embargo with Venezuela so right now they're all coming from the Columbian border and only during the Winter. During the Summer the roads in this part of S America are impassable. Retailers are getting at least $50 each these days - Columbia's second biggest export.

yeah I knew they were from Venezuela. Well, I have a pilot's license, and my parents have a plane. Its about 5k to fill with fuel, 150 a day to park it down there, whos down to pitch in?

Oh and Liveaquaria.com had some Altums for 35 each, but shipping was insane.

Once you get to Columbia there would be travel over dirt roads and we'd need locals' cooperation for all kinds of logistical support including netting the fish. Keep in mind that anyone tied to an existing Altum wholesaler/exporter might get nervous and decide they don't want to help us.

If the plane was loaded with 500 Altums (200 gallons + passengers) the total weight of the plane would be 1 ton. So they might have to be shipped commercially. Dustin said it cost $65 to ship all his fish. That sounds super low but I'm not complaining. I'm figuring conservatively $25 apiece for the fish because we'd be flooding the market. That's $12,500 gross. Not sure what customs would charge in Columbia... Venezuela might actually work better for something small like this but not sure about the legal ramifications.

I love the idea though. I've discovered that in life even if one idea in a hundred works you're way ahead of the game. I'll mention what you wrote to my local fish guy who specializes in importing fish from South America. He'll love the idea of having another contact and the leverage it gives him with the people he's doing business with now.

Dustin likes to say "You gotta have a plan" With something as expansive as this you really do. I won't get to talk to him for a couple of weeks but I'll PM you when I do. I know nothing will probably happen with this idea but I love this kind of stuff.

I was mostly joking, lol. I was thinking of flying down for a day or two (depending on how far one must traverse the jungle to get to the rivers,) catching 5 or 6 and flying back, I have flown to London, Brazil, and France, so I know the 3 miles of paperwork, security checks, and all the bs that goes with international private flights. and with my parents owning resorts all over the world it wouldnt be a problem with a few calls they can make. but yeah.

I'm the man with a plan, yet I never make plans, Analyze, Adapt, and Overcome is how I live my life.

Check out my blog and forum post on my sick Angels and tell me what you think, or if you have seen this before. Or better yet, bring it up next time you see your LFS and see what he has to say. Here were I live we don't have many LFS. The ones we do have are mostly saltwater only stores, so that leaves me with the 17 year old working at Petsmart, not knowing what an angel fish is.
