easiest way to suck up the junk is to use a tube.  what i use for my clients cichlid tank with white sand is to use a water changer and take the large tube off and use the small flex tubing that came with it.  It has a powerful suction to pick up the poo and whatever else is on the sand bed.

 a good way to  get rid of the hair algae is glutaraldehyde ( excel,  or api co2 booster)
